What “without the original” actually means
In the trade this is called an “all keys lost” job. It is different from making a spare, because a spare can be cloned from a working key. What the locksmith needs from you
- The vehicle itself. Programming happens through the OBD port under the dash, so the car has to be present. We come to it.
- Year, make, model and VIN. The VIN is on the driver side dash at the windshield and on the registration. Texting it ahead lets us bring the right blank and confirm the key code before we leave Olympic Boulevard.
- Proof of ownership and photo ID. Registration, title, insurance card or a rental agreement in your name. California locksmiths must check this, and a technician who skips it is one you should not trust with your car.
- Battery with some charge. A dead battery blocks programming. If yours is flat, tell us; we carry a jump pack.
How a new key is made with no original
Step 1: Get the key code
Every vehicle has a key code on file tied to its VIN. A professional locksmith pulls that code through secure industry channels after verifying your ownership. The code tells the cutting machine the exact depth of each cut, so the blade is cut new, not traced from a worn copy.
Step 2: Cut the blade
Standard blades are cut on a code machine in the van in about five minutes. Laser cut blades take a little longer on a milling machine. When the blade is done, the technician tests it in the driver door before touching the electronics.
Step 3: Program the transponder or smart key
The programmer plugs into the OBD port and talks to the immobilizer. On most Asian and domestic brands the tool can add a new key directly. Some vehicles require a security PIN read from the module first. When all keys are lost on certain models, the immobilizer memory has to be reset so it accepts a fresh key list; that is the step that adds time and cost.
Step 4: Test everything
Doors, trunk, ignition or push-to-start, remote buttons and, on smart keys, walking away and back to confirm the proximity functions. We do not leave until the car has started at least twice.
Brands where “all keys lost” is straightforward and where it is not
Usually routine: Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Nissan, Infiniti, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Lincoln, Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Mazda, Subaru. Most of these can be done curbside in under an hour, including 2018 and newer push-to-start models.
Extra steps: Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles from 2018 onward have a secure gateway module, so the programmer needs authorized access before it can talk to the car. Volkswagen and Audi often require online component protection. Both are routine for us but add some time on site.
Often dealer supplied: Newer Mercedes-Benz keys and some late model BMW and Range Rover keys are encoded at the factory and ordered against your VIN. We will tell you on the phone when that is the case so you are not paying for a visit that cannot finish the job.
Why programming it yourself rarely works with zero keys
Search results are full of onboard programming steps: insert key one, turn to on, insert key two, and so on. Those procedures exist on some older Ford, GM and Chrysler models, and they always assume you already have two working keys. They exist to add a third key, not to start from nothing. With no key, the immobilizer will not enter learn mode without a diagnostic tool, and on many cars it will lock you out for a cooling-off period after each failed attempt. Buying a cheap blank online also leaves you with a blade nobody has cut and a chip nobody has programmed.

When a new key is programmed, the old one can still start the car unless it is removed from the immobilizer. If your key was stolen rather than lost, or lost with anything showing your address, ask the technician to erase all previous keys and register only the new one. It takes two extra minutes and is included in the price. Then have one spare made while the equipment is connected; a second key at that moment is a small add-on, far less than a second all-keys-lost call.
